As our homes get smarter, they also become more appealing targets for cyber threats. From smart locks to internet-connected thermostats, every device is a potential entry point into your home network if not properly secured.

1. Change the Default Passwords Immediately

The biggest mistake homeowners make is leaving the factory default passwords (like "admin/admin") on their new smart devices. Always change these immediately upon installation to a strong, unique password.

2. Segregate Your IoT Devices

Your smart TV, smart bulbs, and automated blinds don't need to be on the same network as your personal laptops containing banking information. Set up a dedicated "Guest" or "IoT" network on your router specifically for smart home devices.

3. Keep Firmware Updated

Manufacturers frequently release firmware updates to patch newly discovered security vulnerabilities. While high-end systems like Control4 often manage this through your dealer, DIY devices require you to proactively check their respective apps and install updates.

4. Disable Features You Don't Use

If your smart speaker has voice purchasing enabled and you never use it, turn it off. If your smart lock has a remote unlocking feature but you only ever use the keypad, disable the remote access. Fewer features mean a smaller attack surface.

5. Secure Your Main Router

Your entire smart home relies on your router. Ensure it has a strong administrative password, isn't broadcasting its management interface to the open internet, and is using WPA3 (or at least WPA2) encryption.
